More than 70 million people follow the soccer star on Instagram. Now, David Beckham has used his reach to send an important message to the world.

In an Instagram video on Sunday, the former soccer star explained: “Today I leave my social media channels to Iryna, the head of the maternity hospital in Kharkiv.”
The account, which has 71.5 million followers, then shows scenes of hospital work in wartime conditions in several short clips.
The doctor says: “On the first day of the war, all pregnant women and mothers were evacuated to the basement.” Those were terrible hours. “Unfortunately, we can’t take babies who are in intensive care down to the basement because they rely on life-saving equipment.” She is now at work all day, says Kondratova.
In another story, the doctor shows little Mykhailo. The baby was born in the hospital on the second day of the war with breathing problems. His family home was destroyed in an attack.
“Please give what you can to support Unicef and people like Iryna,” Beckham captioned his video. The doctor also called on the football star’s fans to donate to the Unicef aid fund.
Many civilians died in attacks on Kharkiv
The city of Kharkiv is located in eastern Ukraine, not far from the Russian border. There were several attacks on the city on Sunday night. At least two people died, including a nine-year-old boy, according to Ukrainian authorities.
According to city officials, 266 civilians have been killed in Kharkiv alone since Russian troops invaded Ukraine more than three weeks ago. The information could not be independently verified.
