Rumours of cosmic rays from Mars having entered earth and can have harmful effects on mobile users triggered panic in Indian Kashmir.
Srinagar, Dec 12/Nationalturk – The rumours that cosmic rays from Mars had entered earth and can lead to harmful effects on mobile users triggered panic among residents of Indian administered Kashmir, prompting authorities to issue “Don’t Panic” advisory.
The rumours about cosmic rays from Mars having entered earth and can lead to harmful effects on mobile users started doing rounds of Kashmir last evening. The people began calling newspaper offices and their friends and family members outside Kashmir to check authenticity of the reports.
An official a telecom company said the call traffic increased manifold during late hours in Kashmir as people made frantic calls to check authenticity of the reports.
‘Don’t panic… It’s just a rumour’
An official of Disaster Management Cell clarified that there was no truth in the reports and urged people not to panic.
“There are reports that people all around the world are receiving false messages attributed to NASA and BBC that Cosmo rays are entering Earth from Mars and have asked people to switch off their mobile phones at night and not to keep them inside and to put it away while sleeping. It is clarified that neither BBC nor NASA has released any such news related to Cosmo rays and it is only a rumour,” the official said.
He advised people not to pay any heed to these rumours and help educate others. “Spreading rumours and unsubstantiated warnings is unethical and against the law,” he added.
