The Chinese metropolis of Wuhan is again sending a district into lockdown: four people had become known to have asymptomatic corona cases. Because China is pursuing a zero-Covid strategy, almost a million residents of a district are now in lockdown.

Authorities in Wuhan’s Jiangxia District, which is home to more than 970,000 people, announced Wednesday that “temporary control measures” will apply in key urban areas for three days.

Places of entertainment – including bars, cinemas and internet cafes – small clinics and marketplaces selling agricultural products have been closed. Dining out and large gatherings, from performances to conferences, have been suspended; all places of worship were closed and religious activities were banned. Tutoring institutes and tourist attractions have ceased operations, the government said in a statement.

All public transport, from buses to subways, does not run. Residents have also been asked not to leave the area unless absolutely necessary.

The measures are aimed at “further reducing the flow of people, reducing the risk of cross-infection and achieving a zero-Covid dynamic state in the shortest possible time,” the statement said.

First Corona cases reported in Wuhan in 2020

Wuhan, a transportation and industrial center in central China’s Hubei Province, imposed the world’s first Covid lockdown in early 2020 to contain the rampant coronavirus. The first corona cases had become known there.

There have also been tough lockdowns in other regions of China in the past. The financial metropolis of Shanghai, for example, was quarantined for more than two months. As a result, there was a shortage of food, and emergency patients only received medical care with a delay.

More or less strict restrictions have also been imposed in other cities across the country as infections flare up, with some border towns locked down for months at times.
