CNN journalist Anderson Cooper publicly announces he is gay

The CNN presenter Anderson Cooper reveals he is homosexual, happy and proud of himself.

CNN’s reporter Anderson Cooper has confirmed that he is gay, adding that while privacy is important for journalists, he did not want to give the impression he was hiding something and wanted to stand up against intimidating. Anderson Cooper published an email online and said he was proud of his sexuality and had resolved to speak out in case anybody thought he was abashed.

In the note to Andrew Sullivan of The Daily Beast, and with the understanding that Sullivan would post it, CNN journalist Anderson Cooper explains that he always believed a reporter is entitled to privacy so long as he showed squareness and honesty on the job. CNN said it had no comment and there were no plans for Anderson Cooper to discuss the matter on air.

CNN reporter Cooper is one of the prime time faces of CNN program, which has plummeted to a two decade low in viewership ratings. The journalist, whose sexual identity has long been known within media circles, has told that he had always believed reporters’ political, religious and love lives should not be something they have to discuss publicly. Anderson Cooper often travels to war zones and countries where homosexuality is either banned or frowned upon.

There has long been speculation about Anderson Cooper’s sexuality, with some in the press having contended he has been  romantically linked to Ben Maisani, an owner of several gay clubs.

Anderson Cooper is the most high-profile newsman to come out. His show called ‘ Anderson Cooper 360 ‘ received an award this year from the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation. But CNN journalist Cooper was not the only one in the group of popular homosexuals. Few national television news reporters have publicly acknowledged being gay, with MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow and CNN’s Don Lemon possibly the best known.

Cooper says : ‘ The ability to love another person is one of God’s greatest gifts, and I thank God every day for enabling me to give and share love with the people in my life. I still consider myself a reserved person and I hope this doesn’t mean an end to a small amount of personal space. But I do think visibility is important, more important than preserving my reporter’s shield of privacy. ‘
