New Delhi, May 31/Nationalturk – In order to instill etiquettes among themselves, Chinese women are undergoing etiquette courses and are being taught how to use napkins, knife, fork and other daily-need items.
“Etiquette courses are on the rise in China,” reported Chinese newspaper, China daily.
It said Sara Jane Ho, who is founder of first school of etiquette in China, teaches her students how to use napkins, knife-fork etc.
Her school provides six courses on social etiquette and protocol, including dress sense, table manners and business etiquette. Her students, who range from those marrying into wealthy families to successful businesswomen, learn etiquette through repeated practice in luxury five-star hotels.
During the etiquette course in her school in Beijing, Ho offers lessons how to wipe one’s mouth without getting the napkin dirty, peel an orange without touching it with one’s fingers, and avoid stabbing dinner companions with either steak knife or stiletto.
Ho taught students how to cut orange into two pieces elegantly using a knife and fork.
While demonstrating the initial step to her students, Ho cut-off one end of an orange, allowing it to stand firmly on the plate. She then sliced the fruit from top to bottom with deliberate care until the segmented halves blossomed like flowers.
Ho also taught her students how to remove orange seeds from their mouths in an elegant manner. “First cover the mouth with one hand, and then use the thumb and the first finger of the other to pick out the seeds, which should be put on the side of their plates later,” she told her students.
‘Graceful women don’t make sound while eating’
She further told her students that graceful women don’t make any sound while eating.
“Displaying manners shows people that you respect them, that your individual needs and conveniences can be subordinated to put other people first in a very selfless way. And that is an important attribute for any society, Eastern or Western, rich or poor, traditional or modern,” Ho said.
She said many leading families around the world pay attention to teaching their children etiquette. “They send their children to Switzerland or similar schools in the UK or the United States for the same reason that the Chinese are now studying etiquette”.
“Today’s modern woman is the first to take on the roles of wife, mother, daughter and businesswoman in this new, drastically changing world. What my students find most significant from studying is guidance on how to behave, a frame of reference. Finishing school gives women greater self-confidence and assurance. It is empowering,” she added.
Reports said many Chinese women are undergoing the etiquette courses to bring additional grace to their personality.
