China in national day or mourning for earthquake victims

China have declared a national day of mourning on Wednesday for the 2,064 people who died in the 7.1 magnitude earthquake which occurred in West Central China on 14th of April.

Hundreds of thousands of Chinese officials, soldiers and residents gathered in ceremonies across the Country to show there respect to over 2,000 people who were killed in the earthquake that hit the Sichuan province close to Tibet.

Chinese residents were bowing their heads in a silent tribute while in Yushu County one of the area worst effected by the quake, rescue workers still looking for survivors, along with parents, and children still in their school uniforms stood on a hill showing their respect while buildings which collapsed stood right behind them.

Flags flew at half-mast in all state buildings at 10 am during a three minute silent ceremony which saw the whole country stop and remember the victims of the catastrophe.

Communist Party secretary for Qinghai province, Qiang Wei said “Today, we are gathered here to pay our tribute and send our condolences. The earthquake showed no mercy, but we have love. Let us wipe our tears off and strive to meet a brighter tomorrow and let a more beautiful, wealthy and socialist Yushu stand on the vast Tibetan Plateau,”

China’s Red Cross were donated $100,000, clothing and blankets by U.S. Embassy in Beijing to help the estimated 12,000 people who were injured by the earthquake.

Online games, TV entertainment and sports events were all called off for the national day of mourning while a charity show aired on one of China’s most popular TV channels raised over $319 million to help the quake hit people.
