Victims of the world’s worst nuclear disaster that occurred nearly a quarter of a century ago were remembered on Tuesday in Ukraine.
President Viktor Yanukovich and top officials laid flowers and lit a candle at the memorial complex to the victims in Kiev and honored them with a minute of silence.
In Ukraine, Dec. 14 has been named the Day of Liquidators, those people who were drafted in to deal with consequences of the Chernobyl incident.
On April 26, 1986, Chernobyl’s reactor No. 4 exploded, killing 32 plant workers and firefighters. However, thousands more lost their lives due to diseases due to radiation spewed from the nuclear plant.
Hundreds of thousands of people were resettled from areas contaminated with radiation fallout in Ukraine, Belarus and Russia. Ukrainian authorities estimate over two million people have been suffered from the disaster.
