Rail lines between England and Scotland were cancelled by landslides while the north of England, Scotland and Northern Ireland were all hit by heavy storms.

Rail services remain severely disrupted after torrential rain in parts of Scotland and northern England caused flooding and landslides. Rushing rain lashed Britain, with giant hail stones, lightning and tornadoes. Passengers travelling between England and Scotland abolished nightmare rail journeys after heavy weather and an engine fire entailed serious disruption.

More than a dozen cars were wrecked after they were submerged close to Heworth Metro station in Gateshead, Tyne and Wear. But taxis and buses are being arranged for customers until Network Rail clears the lines.

Floods and heavy rain cause chaos for commuters in United Kingdom

One man died after being swept away by a flooded Shropshire stream, while roads were closed and hundreds of homes evacuated. Northern England, the Midlands, Scotland and Northern Ireland were worst hit by storms that brought lightning, giant hailstones, squalls and tornadoes. In contrast to southern parts of Britain delighted dry weather and temperatures of up to 28 Celsius degrees.

Hundreds of people were stuck on the Virgin London to Glasgow service for up to even fifteen hours. Nick King from Network Rail has told that the problems on the tracks were a result of unprecedented circumstances and the ordinary volume of water has overwhelmed embankments at main points.

While transport continued to be disrupted there was better news from forecasters who predicted that the worst of the storms were over, at the end of a month likely to be one of the wettest Junes on record in United Kingdom.

Travel chaos after floods in UK / trains are cancelled and roads closed

Northern Powergrid Holdings Company based in Newcastle Upon Tyne in England has said that about 3 thousands customers were still without power following the storms – down from 23 thousands yesterday night. The worst-hit areas allow Consett, Whitley Bay, Prudhoe, Shiremoor and Stanhope.

Linda Arkley, Conservative mayor of North Tyneside in England commented : ‘ I know this remarkable downpour, which caused flooding across the borough, has been a very frightening experience for people involved. More than two hundred incidents included evacuating 12 residents with learning disabilities from Manor Park Care Home in Whitley Bay, coming to the aid of residents on oxygen therapy, and coming to the aid of a 101-year-old woman and her 75-year-old son. ‘

Dozens of homes and business buildings were destroyed by flooding in the Cork suburb of Douglas, while parts of Belfast and County Antrim were also badly affected. But the ScotRail spokesman said they are doing everything they possibly can to help all customers and have extra staff on hand to help at stations and that asll customers are advised to get up to date journey information before travelling.
