Fabio Capello claims Wayne Rooney ‘only understands Scottish’ which is why he reserves his best football for Sir Alex Ferguson.
The former England coach has waited until the country’s elimination from Euro 2012 to issue a fresh broadside at Manchester United star, Rooney, after he failed to perform in his two outings at the tournament in Poland and Ukraine.
Capello was irked by Rooney’s recent claims that some of the Italian’s tactical ideas “got lost in translation” when he was in charge of the national team. And, as the 26-year-old continues to produce the goods for the Red Devils but struggles to emulate his top form on the international stage, Capello wonders if United boss Ferguson’s strong Scottish accent is the only language he can understand.
“After seeing the latest game, I think Rooney only understands Scottish,” Capello told Italian radio.
“That’s because he only plays well in Manchester, where Sir Alex Ferguson speaks Scottish.”
Rooney missed the opening two group games for England due to suspension and, while he did score the only goal of the game in the win against Ukraine, he put in a lacklustre overall display. He has since come in for strong criticism having been even less influential in the quarter-final penalty shoot-out defeat against Italy.
