Dheepan by French director Jacques Audiard has received Sunday the Palme d’Or at the Cannes film festival.

The jury, co-presided for the first time in the French festival’s history by two people, the Coen brothers Joel and Ethan, awarded the ultimate prize to Dheepan, a movie on a Tamil Tiger refugee in search of a new life in France.

French cinema dominated the awards ceremony presented by French actor Lambert Wilson.

Indeed, French actor Vincent Lindon received the award for best male performance for his role in the movie La Loi du Marche directed by Stephane Brize.

Moreover, the jury awarded a shared prize to French actress Emmanuelle Bercot, for her performance in Mon Roi (My King) by French director Maiwenn, and to Rooney Mara who plays in the U.S. film Carol, directed by Todd Haynes.

Earlier, French director Agnes Varda, 86, received an honorary Palme d’Or. She is the first woman to be given this award.

The Coen brothers attributed the Grand Prix to Son of Saul by Hungarian director Laszlo Nemes.

The Lobster, directed by Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos, received the Jury Prize.

Taiwanese director Hsiao-hsien Hou was named best director for The Assassin. The best screenplay award was given to Chronic by Mexican Michel Franco (Anadolu Agency).
