Boris and Lilly Becker get divorced

Boris Becker and his estranged wife Lilly Becker are getting divorced after years of separation. His client had applied for the final dissolution of the marriage, the so-called “decree absolute”.

This was announced by the ex-tennis star’s lawyer, Christian-Oliver Moser, on Wednesday on request. “There is a court date in September in this regard, but the parties do not have to be present in person.”

The magazine “Bunte” had previously reported on the upcoming divorce. Accordingly, the appointment will take place on September 18 in London. There was no confirmation of this at first.

English law and why it caused delay

Lilly and Boris Becker have their son Amadeus, who is now 13 years old. The 55-year-old Becker was sentenced to two and a half years in prison in London in April 2022 because he had concealed assets worth millions from his insolvency administrators. He was released in December 2022, was immediately deported to Germany and is not allowed to travel to his former adopted home of Great Britain for the time being.

“Both spouses had already agreed to the dissolution of the marriage in 2018. The relevant applications were received almost at the same time by the competent court in England,” lawyer Moser said. “A court decision (decree nisi) was then issued.” According to English law, a so-called “decree nisi” is required before a divorce can be initiated. The person applying for the divorce can apply for a so-called “decree absolute” after six weeks and one day at the earliest. If this is granted, the divorce is complete.

Moser emphasized: “The question of child support is not the subject of this procedure. My client will of course fully meet his maintenance obligations as soon as they have been finally settled.” The three-time Wimbledon winner also “assumes that the private insolvency proceedings will be completed in the near future,” the statement said.

A bitter dispute between the couple recently broke out over the issue of custody. Lilly Becker accused her ex of not taking enough care of their son Amadeus. Firstly, Boris Becker rarely sees his offspring, secondly, he does not sufficiently meet the maintenance payments. “He doesn’t care at all,” said the 47-year-old. Boris Becker has not admitted to the allegations.

So far, Becker has had to cede part of his income to an insolvency administrator. He says he lives in Italy with his partner Lilian de Carvalho Monteiro. Lilly Becker is also in a relationship again: she has recently been with sports manager Thorsten Weck.
