Scary lake near Las Vegas releases more and more body parts
Lake Mead near Las Vegas is considered one of the most important water reservoirs for the western United States. It is also an important local recreation area and a destination for numerous local and foreign tourists. But because of the persistent drought, the water level of Lake Mead has been falling almost continuously in recent years. Now visitors to the lake have come across several body parts within a few days.
Boat trippers made the first creepy discovery on the afternoon of May 1: According to a report in the newspaper “Sacramento Bee”, a woman on the shore of Lake Mead had drawn her attention to a barrel floating in the lake by screaming. The boatmen then discovered the remains of a human body in the already badly damaged barrel.
“We believe this was homicide resulting from a gunshot wound,” the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department said in a press release. “Based on the clothing and footwear found with the victim, it is believed that the individual was killed between the mid-1970s and early 1980s,” the statement said. According to a report by “Spiegel”, Las Vegas, around 50 kilometers away, was a mafia stronghold in the 1980s. Mafia killers may have sunk their victims in Lake Mead at the time.
More body parts found in Lake Mead
Just five days after this first horrific discovery, two sisters discovered more body parts in Lake Mead while paddling. The bones were buried in the sand, reports “Sacramaneto Bee”, citing the TV channel KLAS. “At first I thought it was a sheep, but then we did a little digging and when we found the jaw, we realized it was human remains,” one of the sisters told the TV station. They then informed the park rangers about the find. The body parts have since been recovered from Lake Mead and are scheduled to undergo an autopsy to determine the cause of death.
Will the lake release more body parts?
And more horror discoveries could follow, as the news portal “npr” reports. “I would say there’s a very good chance that as the water levels go down, we’ll find more human remains,” Las Vegas Police Chief Ray Spencer was quoted as saying by the portal. Lake Mead’s water level has been falling steadily for decades due to extreme drought as a result of climate change.
With a length of about 170 kilometers and an area of 640 square kilometers, it is the largest man-made lake in the USA. It is impounded by the Hoover Dam. Several communities had to be abandoned for the construction of the dam. The ruins of the site of St. Thomas can still be seen when Lake Mead is low. According to npr, a $200 million agreement was recently reached to save the reservoir that millions of people depend on.
