The American band were declared best international group at France’s NRJ awards … then the presenter realised he’d read the wrong name on the card.
This weekend, someone accidentally gave a music prize to the Black Eyed Peas. The American hip-hop group were mistakenly named best international group at France’s NRJ awards, a prize which was meant to be given to Tokio Hotel.
Earlier that evening, Black Eyed Peas had opened the awards ceremony, performing their hit I Gotta Feeling. They posed, pranced and showed off some “lovely lady lumps” – and indeed the track went on to win best international song.
Fergie’s lady lumps also, it appears, dazed the presenters. Choreographer Kamel Ouali and newly minted pop-rapper Ke$ha took the stage to announce the prize for best international group, which last year went to the Pussycat Dolls. Ouali announced the Peas as the winners, applause rang out – and then no one came to collect the award. After a long moment of confusion, Ouali returned and apologised, explaining that he had read the wrong name on the card. Black Eyed Peas were merely first in an alphabetical list of nominees. As boos rang out, the real winner was declared: Germany’s Tokio Hotel.
