Nominees for the 72nd annual Golden Globe Awards were announced Thursday, with “Birdman” leading the way with seven nods.
The awards honor the year’s best in motion pictures and television, separated into “drama” and “comedy or musical” categories.
Included in the nominations for the thematically rich black comedy “Birdman” were best comedy film, best performance by an actor in a comedy for Michael Keaton and best director in a motion picture for Mexican director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu.
“The Imitation Game” and “Boyhood” followed with five nominations each, including the most prestigious award, best motion picture — drama.
The other three nominees in best picture category are “Foxcatcher,” “Selma” and “The Theory of Everything.”
British actors Benedict Cumberbatch (“The Imitation Game”), Eddie Redmayne (“The Theory of Everything”) and David Oyelowo (“Selma”) made up three of the five nominees for the best actor in a drama. Steve Carell for “Foxcatcher” and Jake Gyllenhaal for “Nightcrawler,” round out the category.
The Golden Globes are considered second only to the Academy awards in importance for film, but they are observed closely as a precursor to the Oscars and the ceremony is frequently among television’s most-watched events.
As for TV, the best series — drama category includes “House of Cards,” “Game of Thrones,” “The Good Wife,” “Downton Abbey” and “The Affair.”
Robin Wright, last year’s winner in the best dramatic actress category, is nominated once again for her role as Claire Underwood on the Netflix political drama “House of Cards.”
