In the Euroleague match between Galatasaray and Red Star Belgrade Serbian fan Marko Ivkovic was killed. The man died of knife wounds, as a few hundred Basketball fans of both team went off together.
This is the basketball Euro League match between Galatasaray and Red Star Belgrade has been overshadowed by the violent death of a Serbian fans. Prior to the meeting on Friday evening, the 25-year-old was stabbed outside the stadium. This was confirmed by Zoran Markovic, the Serbian Consul General in Istanbul.
Thus, the man was injured in a clash between a few hundred fans of both camps with a knife hard in the chest. The incident occurred on the street in front of Abdi Ipekci Arena. Turkish doctors fought several hours for the life of the Serbs, but it succumbed to his injury.
Serbian Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic spoke of a “monstrous deed,” his Turkish counterpart Ahmet Davutoglu spoke to him in a telephone call his condolences. The Serbian officials demand for a rapid investigation of the case as well as rapid seizure and punishment of the offender.
Marko Ivkovic was killed in the fight in which stones and flares were thrown. Serbia’s prime minister also warned that Galatasaray coach Ergin Ataman was not welcome in the country after “accusing the killed young man and all other Red Star fans of terrorism,” the government statement said.
The organizer condemned “the senseless violence” in a statement on Saturday and urged both clubs and the investigation authorities to make the Euro League all information about the incident is available. “This tragedy violated the true spirit of sport,” said Euro League president Jordi Bertomeu. Galatasaray won the game 110: 103 extended twice.
