Babiš is in favor of a referendum on whether there should be an American base in the Czech Republic

Former Prime Minister and head of ANO Andrej Babiš is personally very skeptical that there could be an American military base in the Czech Republic.

“I say for myself that we don’t support it because I find it unnecessary,” he told people on his show. “I suppose it is a very sensitive topic and it would be best to hold a referendum on it,” he said.

Babiš also stated that he had no information that NATO would like an American base in the Czech Republic.

ODS Secretary of Defense Jana Cernochova said on Friday that she would hold talks with her counterpart Lloyd Austin in the United States after Easter. According to Černochová, negotiations on the American presence in the Czech Republic are also at stake. “I want to open this topic in this bilateral meeting as well,” she told Deník N.

The US base in the Czech Republic could be in Přerov or Mošnov, said the People’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Labor and Social Affairs Marian Jurečka in Partia na Prima on Sunday. The Ministry of Defense stated on Sunday evening that these are not specific localities.

“The strategy of NATO member states is to build defense systems and a battle group on the eastern border of the territory of NATO member states. It is being implemented in Poland and Slovakia, and we are sending 650 Czech soldiers to lead a battle group of up to 2,100 soldiers. There are soldiers from the United States, Slovakia, Slovenia, the Netherlands, so why should we still have any bases in our country, when we help build these bases in Slovakia, “Babiš said in his program Čau.
