Authorities in Shanghai report corona deaths
For the first time since lockdown began in Shanghai, local authorities have reported the deaths of Covid patients. It was about three elderly people with underlying diseases, as the city administration announced on Monday. The metropolis has been sealed off since the end of March. About 25 million people have been ordered to stay at home. Recently there have been reports on internet platforms about protests due to food shortages and forced resettlements.
In the past few weeks, the authorities had built hundreds of isolation facilities with tens of thousands of beds to house the infected. The number of daily infections had recently exceeded 20,000 – a huge number for China, which had largely been spared the pandemic for the past two years due to strict lockdown. Despite the wave of infections, the authorities in Shanghai had assured up to this point that there were no corona deaths.
