Rafa Benitez who had been in the good books of the Italian fans after his side beat Roma in the Italian Super Cup last weekend looked confused after his side was outplayed by the Spanish club.
The win by Atletico denied Inter a chance to win their fifth cup of the season and equal with Barcelona’s unprecedented six cup win in the 2008-2009 season.
Though Inter Milan was not totally out of character, the majority of the game was controlled by Atletico and goals from former Arsenal player Jose Antonio Reyes, 62 and Argentinean wonder kid Sergio Aguero, 83 managed to beat the Italians.
Though most clubs do not take the European Super Cup too seriously, compared to the domestic league or Champions League, Inter Milan’s performance had eyebrows raised as players such as Eto’O and Sneijder looked out of character.
Benitez who spoke to a TV channel after the match said “We started the game well with two or three chances and then we lost control. At the end it was too open,”
“The tactics are not quite there, we’ve got to work harder. Today we’ve not seen the team we want.”
Inter will now concentrate on preparing for the Italian Seria A League which will be starting this weekend along with the La Liga.
