Switzerland Basel – Armed men Raid Casino in Switzerland making off with hundreds of thousands of dollars.
A gang of armed men dressed in black, raided a casino packed with 600 guests, in Swizerland yesterday in the early hours of the morning making off with over $300,000.
The raid that took place in Grand Casino Basel, which is four minutes drive from Basel airport was raided by approximately 10 masked men at 4am in the morning.
The Casino is amongst the most popular in Europe with high rolling gamblers from all over the continent playing till the early morning hours.
The men smashed the front door with a large hammer, and were armed with machine guns and pistols according to witnesses. The robbers who spoke in French ordered the employees and guests to lie on the ground while others took cash from the registers in the basement and upper floors of the casino.
Some guests and a security guard were slightly beaten by the robbers but no one was seriously hurt. The robbers fired shots at the chandelier to frighten the guests and also tried to open the master safe at the casino by shooting at it, but were unsuccessful.
The men swiftly got into their getaway vehicles with French plates and drove towards the French border according to witnesses which is around 20 minutes drive from the casino.
A women was also flung from her car to the ground by one of the robbers after her car had blocked the way of one of the getaway vehicles.
The recent casino raid resembles the heist that took place in a Berlin casino earlier this month where robbers made off with $240,000.
Swiss officials have said they are working together with French officials to catch the robbers as they suspect a French connection. Police are also investigating if the recent casino raids, first in Germany now in Switzerland were commissioned.
The Swiss media have likened the robbery to Hollywood movies with the professionalism and the swift getaway suggesting the robbers were professional.
