Argentina in World Cup 2010 Finals
Argentina are in the 2010 World Cup finals in South Africa after the 1-0 win over Uruguay
The game which was scrappy from start to end was played in a tense atmosphere as both teams could be knocked out of the finals. The deadlock was ended on the 84th minute when Maradona’s side went 1-0 up after Mario Bolatti placed the ball at the back of the net in a goalmouth scramble.
The goal came just after Uruguay’s Martin Caceres received a second yellow card for a clumsy challenge on Newcastle player Jonas Gutierrez.
Despite Uruguay’s defeat they are still in for a chance of playing at the World Cup Finals due to Chile’s win over Ecuador which was crucial for both Argentina and Uruguay. Uruguay will now play in the play offs against Costa Rica where the winner will find them selves in South Africa next summer.
Honduras, who won 1-0 in El Salvador, took the third automatic place behind the US and Mexico in the North and Central America and Caribbean qualifying group.
Maradona was under pressure due to recent bad results and was being targeted by both Argentina and world press for his sides bad performances.
