Mexico’s National Anthropology and History Institute (INAH) reported the discovery of a cemetery more than 1,000 years old in Comalcalco, Tabasco, possibly of the Mayan civilization.

Archeology field coordinator Ricardo Armijo said the findings consisted of 116 bodies, 66 of them in urns and 50 surrounding these.

Scientists also found animal-shaped clay whistles and rattles, richly attired human figures, and dozens of knives, blades and other elements linked to funeral ceremonies of the Mayan Civilization.

The experts also recovered the largest samples of skeletons ever seen in Mayan territory, leading them to believe it may be a pre-Hispanic Mayan burial ground.

Analysis of the objects found at the discovery site indicate that the burials are 1,161 to 1,200 years old, in line with the Terminal Classic era (750-850 A.D.), although further research is required, Armijo stated.

The archeology discovery site is located about three kilometers north of the Grand Acropolis of Comalcalco.
