Another weird Besiktas transfer story Portuguese Gang : Julio Alves

The newest addition to the Besiktas Istanbul’s ‘Portuguese Gang’, 20 year-old Julio Alves has yet to make his debut for the Turkish side and impress fans, who know absolutely nothing about him, interestingly neither does his ‘former’ coach from Atletico Madrid !

Besiktas Istanbul’s ‘Portuguese Gang’ composed of Simao Sabrosa, Hugo Almeida, Manuel Fernandes and Ricardo Quaresma saw latest addition joining their ranks in Julio Alves, another player, whose transfer rights are owned by prominent football agent Jorge Mendes.

Jorge Mendes has been involved in some of football’s most expensive transfers, including Pepe’s €30 million switch from Porto to Real Madrid and the €94m deal which took Manchester United’s Cristiano Ronaldo to the Santiago Bernabeu. Among his privileged clients is Besiktas and Besiktas chairman Yildirim Demiroren.

Mendes is not only involved in all of the Portuguese players transfers also he has buyed the transfer rights of some talented Besiktas youngsters. And like with the case of young Portuguese player Alves, he sells the transfer rights of some unheralded players to Besiktas Istanbul, a football club starting to look more and more like his own every day.

Another Notch on Besiktas Transfer Scandals

Besiktas bought 50% of Julio Alves’ rights from Atletico Madrid for 3.1 million euros. 50% of the rights means that if Besiktas sells Julio Alves for a certain amount of money during his contract, they get half of the transfer fee and Atletico gets the other half. Julio signed a 5-year contract and he will receive only 300 thousand euros annually as a wage but he will also receive additional unannounced bonuses. His release clause is 12 million euros.

This is a ridiculously high transfer fee for a fairly unknown player who has accomplished nothing of importance yet. One could say, hey this guy plays for Atletico Madrid, he must have some talent, right?

Wait for it…Alves might be a skilled and promising player, but the fact he was transfered from Spanish giants Atletico Madrid would only mislead any fan.

According to Mehmet Çiftçi, a reporter for Turkish newspaper ‘Milliyet’, who resides and works in Spain, Atletico Madrid B Team Trainer doesn’t even know who Julio Alves might be.

Julio Alves was transferred from Rio Ave to Atletico Madrid and only hours later his transfer from Atletico to Besiktas has been completed with the quick intervention from Jorge Mendes. He cashes 3.1 million euros for 50% of Julio Alves’ rights in merely seconds.
