Alleged drug lord Christopher ‘Dudus’ Coke extradited to US

Christopher ‘Dudus’ Coke, the alleged Jamaican drug lord has arrived in the United States to face drug charges and gun trafficking allegations after being extradited by Jamaica.

Coke was captured while allegedly going to the US embassy in the outskirts of Kingston earlier in the week during a military check point.

He was accompanied by Reverend Al Miller who said that he persuaded Coke to hand himself in after the preacher had persuaded the brother of the alleged drug lord to do so earlier in the month.

However it has now been announced that Reverend Al Miller, has been charged with perverting the course of justice and harboring a fugitive after the preacher was also taken into police custody when Coke was captured.

a preacher who was travelling with Coke when he was captured – has been charged with perverting the course of justice and harbouring a fugitive after two days of questioning.

Coke is thought to have been a key supplier of drugs and arms to the US and asked to be extradited to the country after fears that he would have escaped if imprisoned in Jamaica.

The 42-year-old was captured disguised wearing a curly haired wig and appeared briefly in a Jamaican court where he waived his right to trial in Jamaica. He was then put on a flight to New York amid tight security.

While in court, Coke said “I deeply regret the unnecessary loss of life, both civilians and members of the security forces,

“Pray for me and God bless Jamaica,

“I take this decision for I now believe it to be in the best interest of my family, the community of western Kingston – and in particular the people of Tivoli Gardens and, above all, Jamaica.”

A top Jamaican security official had asked for calm by supporters of Coke after the alleged drug lord was captured amid fears that they would react violently.

Just over a month ago, four days of violence had cost the life of over 70 people while several buildings including police stations being set alight.

If convicted, he faces life in prison and millions of dollars in fines.

Christopher ‘Dudus’ Coke is thought to be the leader of the “Shower Posse”, the most powerful gang in Jamaica alleged to have ties to Jamaican Prime Minister Bruce Golding.

The Jamaican PM had initially resisted to the extradition of the alleged drug lord to the US but after mounting international and domestic pressure Golding gave in and accepted.

PM Golding is alleged to have taken the support of Coke to help in the elections in the Tivoli Gardens district where the PM represents the parliament and where the Shower Posse have their greatest influence.

Supporters of Coke say that he was a community leader who helped the poor while the US describes him as the leader of the ‘Shower Posse’ that killed hundreds of people during the 1980’s drug wars in Jamaica.
