Deaths in Russian pipeline explosion

The Urengoy-Pomary-Uzhhorod gas pipeline has been damaged by an explosion. Three people lost their lives.

An explosion on a Russian gas pipeline killed three and injured another. Local officials and the Tass news agency reported on Tuesday.

As a result, the gas flow through the Urengoy-Pomary-Uzhhorod pipeline was interrupted from 1:50 p.m. local time (11:50 a.m. German time). The pipe was damaged near the village of Kalinino, about 150 kilometers from the metropolis of Kazan. Maintenance work was carried out there, officials said. The resulting gas flame has now been extinguished.

Pipeline dates from the 80s

The pipeline was built in the 1980s and runs from north-western Siberia through Ukraine. It is currently the most important connection for Russian gas to Europe, as Russia has stopped supplying gas via Nord Stream 1, for example.

The state-owned Russian gas company Gazprom has not yet commented on what happened.
