The United States and Russia are downplaying the spy case scandal after both sides do not want improved ties to be broken after years of hostility.
Earlier in the week, 10 suspects were arrested and charged in the United States under allegations that they were Russian spy’s trying to get inside information from the US in key areas including Iran and nuclear weapons.
The cold war style allegations spy case came in the week where ties were especially improved and Barack Obama had praised Russian President, Dmitry Medvedev at the White House as a “reliable and solid partner”.
Political analysts have said that neither side is willing for the newly mended ties to deteriorate.
The FBI had earlier said that the reason behind the arrests of the spy’s who were being followed for years was because one of them were about to travel abroad.
However this information has also been approached with caution after it had emerged that several of the spy’s had travelled abroad from the US in many occasions.
A Foreign Ministry official who spoke in the condition of anonymity said “We expect that the incident involving the arrest in the United States of a group of people suspected of spying for Russia will not negatively affect U.S – Russian relations.”
State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley told a news briefing on Wednesday that the US and Russia “going to work as hard as we can to move beyond this.”
An 11th alleged suspect from the spy ring was captured in Cyprus travelling to Hungry and released on bail.
The suspect has since been on the run in the small island.
