Scientific Research: Sports that prolong life the most
Any kind of exercise helps prolong life, a new study finds.
But some sports bring more than others.
The fact that sport and exercise keep people fit and promote health is nothing new. However, a research team in the USA wanted to clarify the connection more precisely and surveyed more than 272,000 adults between 2004 and 2005 about their leisure activities.
From the deaths that have occurred among the test subjects since then, the researchers have now compiled a ranking of the sports that prolong life most effectively.
Racquet sports appear to be particularly healthy
Racquet sports like tennis are at the top of the list. These reduce the risk of premature death by 16 percent and a heart attack by as much as 27 percent. Regular jogging reduces the risk of premature death by as much as 15 percent, followed by walking, aerobics, golf, swimming and cycling.
The researchers emphasize that any form of physical activity can reduce the risk of premature death by 13 percent. It is important to exercise at least 2.5 hours a week.
At least 7.5 hours of exercise per week
According to the study, people who exercise between 7.5 and 15 hours a week have the greatest effect: they can reduce the risk of dying prematurely by 31 percent.
The 272,550 participants in the studies were between 59 and 82 years old, 157,415 were men (58 percent). Twelve years after the survey, 43 percent of the study participants had died, 38,800 of them from cardiovascular diseases.
