Due to the Russian war of aggression, there are calls for the country to be excluded from the G20 alliance. The Russian ambassador has now announced that Vladimir Putin wants to come to a summit meeting.
Despite the war in Ukraine and international pressure, Russian President Vladimir Putin plans to attend the G20 summit on the Indonesian island of Bali in October. “It depends on the situation. But he (Putin) intends to come to the G20 meeting,” Russian Ambassador to Indonesia Lyudmila Vorobyova told journalists on Wednesday.
Western nations, on the other hand, are considering excluding the country from the group of the 20 most important industrialized and emerging countries after the attack on Ukraine.
“Not only the G20, but also other organizations are trying to exclude Russia,” Vorobyova said. “The West’s response is totally inappropriate.” In addition, excluding Russia will not help the global economy. The summit is also not the right forum to deal with the conflict.
The spokesman for the Indonesian Foreign Ministry, Teuku Faizasyah, made a similar statement last week. Indonesia holds the G20 presidency this year. The Bali Summit will take place on October 30th and 31st.
However, a veto by other G20 members against Russia’s exclusion can be expected: China, India and Saudi Arabia are also members of the G20 and have not followed the West’s action against Russia after the invasion of Ukraine.
Scholz expressed reservations
Chancellor Olaf Scholz had recently expressed reservations about the Polish demand for Russia to be excluded. This is a question that should be discussed among the members and “not decided individually,” said Scholz on Tuesday in Berlin. “Clearly, we’re busy with something other than getting together,” he added. Poland does not belong to the group of the 20 most important industrial countries in the world (G20).
Scholz called on Russian President Vladimir Putin for an immediate ceasefire in Ukraine. “We all need an immediate ceasefire, the withdrawal of the invaders and the opportunity to negotiate a peace agreement with each other.” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is pushing for a direct meeting with Putin, said Scholz.
