New Delhi, March 5/Nationalturk-: The general elections in India will be held in nine phases starting on April 7 and results will be declared on May 16.
The Chief Election Commissioner VS Sampath along with two Election Commissioners HS Brahma and SNA Zaidi announced the poll schedule today.
As per the scheduled, nine-phase polling for election parliamentary members for 543 seats in India will be held between April 7 and May 12. “The counting of votes will be held on May 16.”
It is for the first time in India’s history that voting will take place in nine phases.
“The first phase of polling will be held on April 7 covering 6 constituencies, second phase on April 9 covering 7 constituencies, third phase on April 10 covering 92 constituencies, fourth phase on April 12 covering 5 constituencies, fifth on April 17 covering 122 constituencies, sixth phase on April 24 covering 117 constituencies, seventh phase on April 30 covering 89 constituencies, eighth phase on May 7 covering 64 constituencies and ninth phase on May 12 covering 41 constituencies,” India’s Chief Election Commissioner announced.
814 million people eligible to cast votes
814 million people are eligible to cast their votes — 100 million more than in the last elections in 2009.
The term of Lok Sabha (lower house of Indian parliament) expires on June 1 and the new House has to be constituted by May 31.
The 2014 general elections will see the introduction of “None of the Above” (NOTA) option in voting, which came into vogue in the assembly elections a few months ago.
Opinion polls have predicted that rightwing Hindu party BJP will emerge as the largest party. If that will be the case then controversial BJP leader Narendra Modi, accused of 2002 anti-Muslim riots in Indian state of Gujarat, will be next Prime minister of India.
