A  20-year-old woman in Indian State of West Bengal was gang raped on the orders of village council (Panchayat court).

New Delhi, Jan 23/Nationalturk – In a shameful incident, a  20-year-old woman in Indian State of West Bengal was gang raped on the orders of village council (Panchayat court).

Indian TV news channel NDTV quoted police in Birbhum area of West Bengal as saying that 20-year-old woman on Monday night on the orders of the village council and gang-raped as punishment for falling in love with a man from a different religion.

“The 20-year-old is in a local hospital in critical condition,” they said.

Official sources said at least 12 to 13 men had reportedly gangraped her on the orders of a village kangaroo court.

‘Victim’s family was first asked to pay fine of Rs 2000’

Media reports said that the victim’s family was first asked to pay fine of Rs 2000. “However, when family expressed its inability to pay the fine, the village headman allegedly ordered the gang-rape of the woman”.

Police said the woman was then forcibly moved to a small hut where she was sexually assaulted by at least 13 men.

When she was released, she was warned not to share her ordeal.  But her family helped her to file a police case.

Victim accused 13 of raping her

According to police, victim has accused 13 people, including some members of a single family, of raping her.

“All the accused have been arrested and sent to 14 days custody by a local court,” police said.

Asit Biswas, an official at the hospital where she was being treated told NDTV that victim’s condition continues to be critical. “She has lost a lot of blood and only because she is physically and mentally very strong, she could survive the ordeal””.
