A report has revealed that militant attacks in Pakistan increased by 9 per cent in 2013. The suicide bombings in the country also rose by 39 per cent last year.
Islamabad, Jan 6/Nationalturk – Amid continued desire among some of Pakistan’s political parties including ruling PML-N to hold talks with terrorist group Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), a report has revealed that militant attacks in Pakistan increased by 9 per cent in 2013.
“The militants carried out 1717 terrorist attacks across Pakistan in 2013. In these terrorist attacks, 2451 people were killed and 5438 injured,” revealed ‘Pakistan Security Report 2013’ released by an Islamabad-based research institute—Pakistan Institute for Peace Studies (PIPS).
‘People killed in terrorist attack rose by 19 %’
The report revealed that as compared to 2012, the terrorist attacks in Pakistan increased by 9 per cent in 2013. “People killed and injured in terrorist attacks rose by 19 percent and 42 percent, respectively as compared to the previous year”.
According to PIPS study, the terrorist group TTP lost losing many of its top leaders in drone attacks and also military operations. “However, the group’s operational capabilities remained intact. TTP carried out 645 terrorist attacks in 50 districts across Pakistan in 2013”.
‘Suicide bombings increased by 39 per cent’
The report further stated that suicide attacks in Pakistan rose by 39 percent. “46 suicide attacks took place in the country in 2013 as compared to 33 in 2012. Of the total suicide bombings, 34 attacks were carried by TTP and other militant groups while 9 were carried out by sectarian group Lashkar-e-Jhangvi”.
The report further reveals that sectarian violence in Pakistan also increased in 2013 as compared to previous years. “The overall incidents of sectarian violence, including sectarian-related attacks and clashes, witnessed a slight increase but number of people killed and injured in these incidents significantly increased”.
It revealed that there were 208 incidents of sectarian-related terrorist attacks in the country in 2013 in which 658 people were killed and 1,195 injured.
