The Arsenal midfielder wants revenge in Germany after losing at home to Dortmund last month and says the team are in the mood – and the form – to get it.

Arsenal are five points clear in the Premier League after overcoming the challenge of Liverpool with goals from Santi Cazorla and Aaron Ramsey and by keeping Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge quiet at the other end.

Arsenal’s midfield dominated the visitors in the first half then repelled a fightback in the second, with Arteta superb in his holding role.

The game was significant for Arsenal after two home defeats, proving they can beat one of their big rivals, and Arteta said: “It’s a massive win. We created far more chances than they did and it was only at the end when we got a bit sloppy and gave the ball away that they really came close to scoring.

“But by that time the game was over.

“We played some terrific football and they struggled to cope with our quality.

“We are at the top. That’s the difference. We have more belief and we are starting to create a bit of fear in the opposition and that gives us a better chance to win.

“When you are on a good run and the confidence level is high, it makes everything much easier.

“We knew this week was going to be tough and this is a good way to start it. Dortmund is going to be a very different game to this one. They play a very different game to Liverpool. It’s a massive game and we don’t want to be going to Naples needing a win.”

Bacary Sagna says Arsenal have added steel and flair with the arrivals of Mathieu Flamini and Mesut Ozil, which have boosted confidence.

“In the last few seasons we were responding technically, but when we had to go to tough physical games sometimes we were not responding,” said Sagna.

“Now we are more confident because of the arrival of Ozil and Flamini.

“With Ozil, Arsenal have even improved technically and with Flamini we get the confidence of the physical challenge. The team is more together as a group so we can respond to every aspect of every game.” Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers got his formation wrong in the first half, with his three central-defenders and wing-backs overrun as their midfield just could not get the ball.

Suarez and Sturridge were starved of service and the frustration showed as the pair squabbled several times.

Suarez was a handful all game with an enticing blend of strength, pace and vision and was unfortunate not to score.

But Arsenal’s one-touch passing was again impressive, formula-one football as Ozil called it.

Rodgers says his task is to close the gap on teams like Arsenal. “The better team won, make no mistake about that,” he said. “Arsenal have wonderful technicians, good mobility. Ozil is world class, Ramsey has taken his game to another level, Arteta is a good player, Cazorla joining in, Rosicky, five players who are top-class technicians and we had three in there. They have real good quality and they are at a high level.

“There’s other teams, you can look at Chelsea’s squad, Arsenal’s squad – even with the players who are out – and Manchester City’s. For us to be where we are shows that we have a fighting chance.

“The plan is to stay there. We’re trying to build something, in terms of our depth of squad and the nature of our game. Without that major investment, it just takes a bit of time.

“Arsenal are winning the race. These 10 games that we’ve all played, people say that it’s early but you don’t get them back. You don’t get to play them again.”

However, manager David Moyes believes that his England star has now become ‘a man’ on the pitch for Manchester United.

Gone are the flashes of temper, the rash challenges and the wayward thinking that so often blotted the younger Rooney.

In their place is a team player, who accepts responsibility, shuns retaliation or retribution and lets his football do the talking – but whose will to win is as formidable as ever. As is his partnership with Robin van Persie.

Between them, that pair had this game against hapless Fulham wrapped up inside the first 22 minutes. Their combination was devastating, both of them deadly yet utterly unselfish.

Rooney, who has played like a man possessed for both United and England for most of this season, now appears to be almost leading his club out of their early-season doldrums through his own sheer will.

This was United’s fourth win in a row and it could have been by an even bigger margin.

And Moyes said: “He’s a big leader in the team now. He’s desperate for us to be successful and obviously having a successful team helps him as well.

“He has leadership qualities – and he’s a man when he’s on the pitch. Even in this game, I needed to pull him out wide for the last 15 minutes just to make sure we didn’t do anything stupid. He understands that. I think he’s at an age now he can see that as well.”

Rooney, put away by Van Persie’s ball, set up Antonio Valencia for the first after just nine minutes. Then after Adnan Januzaj robbed Scott Parker, Van Persie rifled home No 2 . And when Fulham’s dozy defence then played him onside, the Dutchman set up Rooney or the third goal. United are still eight points off the leaders, but momentum is building.

Moyes said: “We are improving, and we know we have to. There are signs we’re coming to it. That was the best spell we have had since I came here.” As for Fulham, this latest dismal result leaves manager Martin Jol on a precipice. Owner Shahid Khan has been supportive, but two wins in nine games tells its own story. The Cottagers face Liverpool at Anfield on Saturday before the international break.

Fulham, dreadful in the first half and booed off, improved after the break when, admittedly, the game was lost, with Steve Sidwell and Pajtim Kasami at least showing some fight. They pulled one back when Alex Kacaniklic’s shot was deflected in off the unlucky Rooney before substitute Darren Bent hit the crossbar. But it was not good enough.

Jol was outraged by the fans’ treatment of Bryan Ruiz – there were cheers when the Costa Rican was substituted. “It was very disappointing,“ said Jol. “Bryan comes back from getting Costa Rica to the World Cup finals and he gets that sort of reception. I had to whisper a few words in his ear, tell him he is arguably my best player. Maybe the fans don’t need me – but they need Bryan.”

It was later revealed that Ruiz has been playing with a back problem for several weeks.

Late on, full-back Sascha Riether was lucky not to get sent off for a stamp on Januzaj. Former Fulham skipper Danny Murphy, commentating on Match of the Day, said it was the most aggressive Fulham had been all game.

But Murphy was outraged to see Riether smiling and swapping shirts at the end. “I would never have allowed that,” he said.

It was a defeat that Mourinho did not take lying down following strikes from Yoan Gouffran and Loic Remy. And he has vowed to swing the axe for Wednesday’s Champions League visit of Schalke.

“It is fair to say I am angry and frustrated. I am angry and frustrated with the team and I am part of the team. I will look at myself as well,” said Mourinho. “What would you have done differently? I would have changed 11 players.

“You have to know why you win and you don’t win by a miracle. You win by effort, commitment, ambition, quality, by expressing yourself individually but in the team context.

John Terry smacked an early header against the crossbar, but Newcastle squeezed the life out of Chelsea’s attacking intentions with their impressive work-rate and well-drilled defence.

As the game wore on, the Magpies began to carve out numerous opportunities and fully deserved their opener as Gouffran stooped low to head in Yohan Cabaye’s inch-perfect cross.

Eden Hazard missed Chelsea’s best chance to level but, with just a minute to go, Remy’s crisp finish from Vurnon Anita’s cut-back ended the contest.

Newcastle’s players were fired up after their 2-1 defeat by Sunderland the previous weekend, while club owner Mike Ashley is furious.

An anti-Ashley demonstration received some favourable coverage in the local press a fortnight ago, with the result that the multi-millionaire has banned several newspapers from St James’ Park.

It is a row manager Alan Pardew could well do without as he looks to find consistent results, but he has backed his owner, saying: “It’s important for the club and the fans to know that we are trying to do the right thing. You can say Mike should put another £100million in, but we are trying to do the right thing.

“ He understands the fine lines that we are working in. He knows we played well at Sunderland and we could have won there.

“The breaks in the game can make all the difference and we got the breaks in this match , whereas at Sunderland we didn’t.

“I can say to my players your work-rate, commitment, passion and quality are all there and if you do that every week, you will win more than you lose.”

When asked if defeat by Chelsea would have put his job on the line, Pardew said: “No, I don’t think that at all. It’s a big win, but that’s the problem with the media up here.

“We have beaten Chelsea and that’s it, but let’s not get carried away and say we are going to be in Europe and we’ll be great, or it will be a disaster if we had lost three on the trot. I honestly don’t see that. I t is very important that we keep the city’s feet on the ground.

“Of the six managers in this region we have lost five of them. I just think it sometimes goes mad up here and we have got to keep it together. Sometimes we don’t always help ourselves.”

Newcastle may be in the midst of yet another local dispute, but on the pitch you would not have known it. Beforehand Pardew joked that he would give Mourinho a friendly slap if he over-zealously celebrated an away goal. But he did not need to – his team did the slapping for him.
