Louis van Gaal under consideration as club’s new sporting director.
Louis van Gaal is in line for a senior managerial role at Liverpool. The Dutchman was linked with a move to Anfield in the wake of Damien Comolli’s dismissal as director of football in April. However, while it has since been decided to change the management structure at Liverpool, Van Gaal has remained under consideration for a revised role and is the leading contender to become the club’s first sporting director.
Expected to work with the new team manager when appointed
Van Gaal is currently without employment after the Dutchman lost his job at Bayern Munich in April 2011 after almost missing out on qualifying for the Champions League.
It is understood that Van Gaal would be interested in a move to Merseyside as Fenway Sports Group (FSG), the club’s American owners, look to create a new role at the club.
The changes at Anfield follow the sacking of manager Kenny Dalglish, director of football Damien Comolli and director of communications Ian Cotton following a disappointing Premier League campaign that saw them finishing eighth 37 points off champions Manchester City.
The 60 year-old has a managerial curriculum vitae that includes two La Liga titles, four Eredivisie titles in his homeland and one Bundesliga title in Germany while he has led Ajax to success in the Uefa Cup and Champions League while also won the Uefa Super Cup with Barcelona.
