Prime Minister Gordon Brown had a phone conversation with his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
In the course of the conversation, initiated by British side, the Premiers discussed the EU Presidential race, EU-Turkey relations as well as issues concerning Cyprus dispute.
Prime Minister of Belgium, Herman Van Rompuy has been elected the first President of EU. He is “a hard-line opponent of Turkey’s bid to join the European Union” grounding his argument on that this integration would “dilute Europe’s Christian heritage”.
The election of Van Rompuy arouses concern of Ankara. Turkey attempts to get guarantees that talks on joining EU will continue.
