In yet another accident, nine passengers were killed when a train they were travelling in caught fire in India’s Maharashtra’s State early Wednesday.
Mumbai, Jan 8/Nationalturk – At least nine passengers, including a woman, were killed when a train they were travelling in caught fire near Dahanu town in India’s Maharashtra’s State early Wednesday.
Officials said fire erupted in S-3 coach of the speeding Mumbai-Dehradun Express near Dahanu in Maharashtra state at around 0230 hours when passengers were sleeping. “The fire spread to adjoining coaches (S-4 and S-5) as well”.
“Nine passengers have been killed in the fire in the train,” said the press officer for Western Railways. Among the dead is a woman.
Indian Railways orders inquiry
Indian Railway Board has ordered an inquiry into the incident.
Officials said fire was brought under control shortly after the train was brought to a halt at Gholwad station, around 145 km from north of Mumbai
They said nearly a dozen persons have sustained fire injuries and have been hospitalised.
Immediately after the incident, top railway and civil officials visited the site to take stock of the situation.
Indian Railway Minister Mallikarjun Kharge has expressed concern over the incident.
“An inquiry has been ordered to ascertain what exactly caused the fire,” he said.
