78 women representatives mark the highest number of female presence in the new turkish parliament.
Turkey elections resulted in the ruling party AKP ‘s resounding victory and an increase of women representatives’ number in the new parliament. The number of women in the turkish Parliament has risen from 50 seats to 78, leading the female presence to have 14% of the 550 seats of the Great National Assembly (in 2007 they were 9%).

The women candidates for AKP, premier minister Recep Tayyip Ergodan’s Party of Justice and Development, took the lion’s share: 45 of the women elected belong to moderate Islamist party. The biggest opposition party CHP, the Republican People’s Party, sent 19 women members, while the other opposition party MHP, Nationalist Movement Party sent 3. Independents also will have a large presence in the parliament. 35 Independent candidates were selected, 19 women representatives among them.
