Breaking News – 6.2 magnitude earthquake hits North Chile
The U.S. Geological Survey reported that the epicenter of the quake was east northeast of Calama around 61.5 miles beneath the ground and hit around 20:11 local time.
Johaziel Jamett, head of the early warning centre at Chile’s state emergency office Onemi, who spoke to REUTERS, said “It was a quake of medium intensity. It caused some consternation among residents, but there are no reports of any damage”.
The North of Chile is known for the wide numbers of coal mines and other types of mines which a large amount of the economy of the Latin country is based on.
Fortunately no reports of any explosions or damage were reported.
Just in February, an 8.8 magnitude earthquake had ripped through central and southern Chile killing at least 500 people, injuring thousands and causing massive damage.
