50,000 evacuations in Australia due to floods, natural disaster declared
In the Australian state of New South Wales, 50,000 people have been evacuated because of the floods that hit the area.
On Monday, that number was still at 32,000. The Australian government has declared the situation a natural disaster. This means that emergency aid can be sent to the region more quickly.
It has rained incessantly in and around Sydney for the past four days. Some parts of the region have seen more rain in recent days than in an entire year in London. Parts of the area are under meters of water and 20,000 people are without electricity.
Some of the regions that are now inundated were also hit by severe weather and flooding in February and March.
