5.9 magnitude earthquake hits Cost Rica, no injuries reported

A 5.9 magnitude earthquake has hit Costa Rica early Saturday morning.

According to officials there have been no reports of injuries or any serious damage to buildings where as a huge proportion of the country felt the earthquake which was at 98 kilometers in depth.

The biggest affected areas were in the Northern Costa Rica where damages to the interior of buildings like shelves were broken.

The emergency services in the Latin American country reported no emergency calls but there were complaints that mobile phone networks were down.

However, there were still frightened people unable to go into their homes and it is expected that a large proportion of the affected areas may spend the night outdoors.

The last major earthquake to hit Costa Rica was in Jan 2009 when a 6.1 magnitude tremor killed 20 people and injured dozens.
