New Delhi, July 15/Nationalturk – At least four Indian Muslim youth are suspected to have joined Sunni militant group ISIS in Iraq and are fighting alongside with the militants.
“Authorities have gathered information on four men from Indian state of Maharashtra, who have joined ISIS in Iraq and are fighting in Iraq,” Indian newspaper Mail Today quoted officials as saying.
They said police and intelligence officials questioned families of the four men and submitted a detailed report to Indian home ministry.
According to the newspaper, the four men have been identified as Arif Fayaz Majeed, residents Fahad Tanvir Sheikh, Aman Naim Tandel and Shaheen Farooqi Tanki and all of them are in their 20s.
“Security agencies are also in touch with their Iraqi counterparts to get details about other Indians, who are believed to be fighting with ISIS,” officials said adding there is no past record of their involvement in any militant activities.
‘Indian intelligence agencies checking details’
The intelligence agencies have sought details from different states in India, where young men are believed to have gone to Iraq.
“We are trying to identify families who have young men in Iraq. If we get details and suspect that they could be fighting for ISIS, we will inform the Iraqi authorities,” said an official.
Indian security officials suspect that some more Muslim men from southern states of Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka may have joined the ISIS in Iraq.
