In a deadly Maoist attack in Indian state of Chattisgarh, 20 Indian police and paramilitary soldiers are feared dead.
New Delhi, March 11/Nationalturk- At least 20 Indian police and paramilitary soldiers are feared dead in an attack by Maoists (also known as Naxalites) in Dantewada area of Chattisgarh state. The death toll may go up.
Indian TV news channel NDTV quoted police sources as saying that a large group of Maoists armed with weapons ambushed a joint patrol party of police and paramilitary CRPF men in Tongpal near Jeeram valley in Dantewada district of Chhattisgarh state.
They said the security men returned the fire, triggering an encounter.
“In the ensuing encounter, which is going on, at least 19 police and paramilitary soldiers are feared dead. Many police and paramilitary personnel have also been injured in the Maoist attack,” sources said adding bodies of five security men have been recovered so far.
Police officer confirms death of 20 security men
Chhattisgarh Police ADG Mukesh Gupta was quoted as saying by Indian TV channel CNN-IBN that 20 security men were killed in the attack. “15 were paramilitary soldiers and five were policemen”.
Sources said the death toll may go up. “There were 44 police and paramilitary personnel in the patrol party when it was attacked by a large group of armed Maoists”.
Additional police and paramilitary soldiers have been rushed to the spot to flush out the Maoists and prevent them from escaping.
The Indian State of Chattisgarh has witnessed many attacks of Maoists in the past, causing heavy casualties to security men.
