A school girl of 14 years old was unattended in a tanning salon where she spent 19 minutes under the sun bed where she got first degree burns to 70% of her body
The girl who went into a sun bed for the first time was unattended and was unsure of how long she should stay. She put a pound in the coin operated machine where she stayed for 5 minutes. She did not notice a tan so she slotted in £3 more and stayed under the sun bed for a total of 19 minutes.
She was rushed to the hospital four hours later with first-degree burns to 70% of her body. She was put on a drip and given oxygen while doctors rehydrated her and gave her strong pain killers to ease the pain.
James Hadley, 25, the owner of the ‘Lextan’ salon, admitted five health and safety offences. which are failing to staff premises throughout opening hours, failing to ensure goggles were available for customers and failing to ensure sunbeds were capped at a maximum 15 minutes exposure.
He also admitted employing a young person without carrying out a risk assessment and making a false statement to council investigators.
