The Republican People’s Party is a day away from being appointed its new leader, as Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu (Turkish Ghandi) is the sole candidate for the position in the party’s 33rd General Assembly.
The General Assembly of the Republican People’s Party (CHP), kicked off on Saturday 22nd and will carry on till Sunday where, Kılıçdaroğlu will be chosen as the new leader of the main opposition Party.
The assembly which is taking place at the Ataturk Sport Hall in Ankara, was also filled with CHP supporters from all four corners of the country and the majority were there to show their support for Kılıçdaroğlu.
A huge amount of supporters of the CHP, who could not get into the sports hall waited outside and delayed the entrance of Kılıçdaroğlu due to their excitement.
The thousands of people who packed into the hall shouted “Prime Minister Kemal” as Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu entered the arena.
The General Secretary of the CHP, Önder Sav, even fell over some of the supporters while on the platform inside the sports hall as he was hastily put back onto his feet with the help of onlookers.
Many MP’s, CHP members and members of the press risked being trampled on due to the excitement of the supporters.
As of noon, Saturday, Kılıçdaroğlu was announced to be the sole candidate of the 33rd General Assembly of the Republican People’s Party.
Kılıçdaroğlu has had huge support from the majority of the CHP supporters, members, MP’s and other high profile people linked to the Party.
The second part of the Assembly will take place on Sunday where a vote will take place, but with Kılıçdaroğlu the sole candidate, and with the constant support he is receiving, it is inevitable that the Republican People’s Party will be appointed its new leader after 18-years.
The Republican People’s Party have also received applause from political experts and many organizations and Party’s in Europe after the show of unity with a sole candidate.
The sex tape scandal which, was said to be a fake by a private company hired by the CHP, had rocked Turkey and the CHP after the former leader, Deniz Baykal was alleged to have had an affair with a fellow MP, Nesrin Baytok, who was the former personal assistant of Baykal.
“The show of unity after such a distressful time of the Party has shown to those, who were behind the disgusting sex tape that their actions have failed, we are stronger and more powerful than before,” said one member of the CHP Party during the assembly.
The former leader of the CHP, Deniz Baykal was not seen in the congress and no word has come of the 71-year-old who was said to have been upset with Kılıçdaroğlu for not telling the former leader of his candidacy at the CHP General Assembly.
But Saturday was Kılıçdaroğlu’s day, and with the wide support from the CHP he has already made promises and has attacked the government and in particular the Prime Minister of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan of the reforms he has tried to make (particularly the constitutional reform) and the promises which he has not kept.
